Varanasi, the spiritual heart of India, is grappling with severe flooding as the Ganga River surges due to relentless monsoon rains across northern India. As of July 17, 2025, the city’s iconic ghats, temples, and low-lying areas are underwater, disrupting daily life, religious practices, and local businesses. The rising waters have prompted authorities to issue flood alerts and activate relief measures to support affected residents.
Heavy rainfall has caused the Ganga River to swell rapidly, submerging all 84 ghats in Varanasi, including prominent ones like Assi Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, and Manikarnika Ghat. The Central Water Commission reported the Ganga’s water level at 68.94 meters on July 16, 2025, just below the danger mark of 70.26 meters. The river’s tributary, the Varuna, has also overflowed, flooding residential areas like Pulkohna, Salarpur, and Hidayat Nagar. The Subah-e-Banaras stage at Assi Ghat and the Maa Sheetla Temple are inundated, halting cultural and religious activities.
The Varanasi administration is on high alert, with flood control measures in place:
The flooding extends beyond Varanasi, affecting districts like Prayagraj, Ballia, and Sambhal. In Ballia, the Ganga is flowing above the danger mark at 58.12 meters, marooning fields and villages. Prayagraj faces similar threats, with the Yamuna River also nearing critical levels.
While water levels in Varanasi stabilized slightly by July 17, 2025, the threat of further flooding remains due to ongoing rains. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines. Authorities are focusing on water management and timely interventions to minimize damage. As the city battles this crisis, the resilience of Varanasi’s people and the administration’s efforts will be crucial in navigating the aftermath.
