Konda Laxman Bapuji: Freedom Fighter and Torchbearer of Telangana Movement
Konda Laxman Bapuji (1915–2012) was an Indian freedom fighter, social activist, and veteran leader who played a significant role in India’s independence struggle and later became one of the most respected voices in the movement for a separate Telangana state. Remembered for his integrity and lifelong commitment to public service, Bapuji’s contributions straddled both national and regional struggles, making him an enduring figure in modern Indian political history.
Early life and freedom struggle
Born in Wankidi village, Adilabad district, in 1915, Bapuji joined the freedom movement at a young age, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s call for non-violent resistance. He participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 and was imprisoned for his involvement in civil disobedience against colonial rule. His participation in the anti-Nizam struggle in Hyderabad further underscored his dedication to the cause of justice and self-rule.
Political career and service
After Independence, Konda Laxman Bapuji entered active politics, representing the Indian National Congress. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and later became a Minister in the Andhra Pradesh government, handling portfolios such as forests and handlooms. In these roles, he worked for the upliftment of farmers, artisans, and marginalised communities, especially championing the cause of handloom weavers.
Notably, Bapuji resigned from his ministerial post in the 1960s to express solidarity with the demand for a separate Telangana, highlighting his willingness to place public causes above personal ambition.
Role in Telangana movement
In his later years, Konda Laxman Bapuji emerged as a moral force in the renewed demand for Telangana statehood. Though not directly aligned with any single political party during the agitation of the 2000s, his public support gave legitimacy and inspiration to younger leaders and activists. He frequently articulated that Telangana’s demand was rooted not just in regional pride but in socio-economic justice and equitable development.
Recognition and legacy
Bapuji passed away on 21 September 2012, just two years before the formal creation of Telangana in 2014. Political leaders across parties paid tribute, acknowledging his contributions both to India’s freedom and to Telangana’s identity.
In his honour, Telangana observes “Konda Laxman Bapuji Jayanti”, recognising his lifelong service to the people. His legacy is often invoked in discussions on ethical politics, regional justice, and leadership grounded in principles rather than power.
Conclusion
Konda Laxman Bapuji’s life spanned colonial rule, India’s freedom, the reorganisation of states, and the eventual birth of Telangana. His story reflects the journey of a principled leader who prioritised the collective good over personal gain. For today’s India, he remains an exemplar of how integrity, sacrifice, and moral clarity can shape both national and regional histories.
