Belagavi, Karnataka: A family from Bihar faced a distressing ordeal after relying on Google Maps for navigation during their road trip to Goa. Their journey took an unexpected turn when the app directed them into the dense Bhimgad forest in Karnataka’s Belagavi district, leaving them stranded overnight in the wilderness.
A Holiday Gone Awry
Ranjit Das and his family were traveling late at night on December 4 when the navigation app suggested a route through the Shiroli and Hemmadaga areas. Unaware of the challenges ahead, they followed the directions, which led them 7-8 kilometers into the forest.
Without mobile network coverage in the remote area, the family found themselves unable to call for help. They were forced to spend the night in their car, surrounded by the dangers of the forest, which is known for its diverse wildlife, including recent incidents involving bear attacks.
A Strenuous Search for Help
The following morning, Ranjit Das ventured on foot for nearly four kilometers in search of mobile connectivity. Once he regained a signal, he contacted emergency services through the helpline number 112. Local police were alerted and coordinated a rescue operation with assistance from villagers.
Using GPS coordinates provided during the call, police successfully located and rescued the family. Khanapur police inspector Manjunath Nayak emphasized that the family was fortunate to find mobile connectivity in time, as the forest’s wildlife posed significant risks.
Google Maps Under Scrutiny
This incident has reignited debates about the reliability of navigation apps in India, particularly in remote and poorly mapped regions. In recent months, Google Maps has faced criticism for other navigation-related mishaps.
- In late November, three men tragically died in Uttar Pradesh after their car drove off an incomplete bridge while following directions from the app.
- Earlier in August 2024, a traveler from Bengaluru missed his flight to Mumbai after Google Maps significantly underestimated the travel time to Kempegowda International Airport.
Cautionary Tale for Travelers
While technology offers convenience, incidents like these highlight the importance of verifying routes, especially in unfamiliar or remote areas. Authorities advise travelers to rely on local guidance or well-known routes in addition to navigation apps to avoid similar mishaps.
As the digital world becomes increasingly intertwined with daily life, such incidents underscore the need for improved mapping accuracy and awareness among users.
