Mohammed Shami’s Fiery Comeback: A Five-Wicket Haul and a Perfect Response to Trolls
Summary: Mohammed Shami silences critics with a five-wicket haul against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy opener. The pacer, often targeted for his religion, gives a classy response to trolls while reflecting on his journey from injury to redemption.
Dubai:
India’s pace ace Mohammed Shami made a resounding statement in the Champions Trophy 2025, delivering a match-winning 5/53 against Bangladesh in India’s opening clash. After battling a career-threatening injury, Shami stepped up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, proving once again why he remains one of India’s most lethal bowlers.
Overcoming Injury and Setbacks
The 34-year-old pacer had been sidelined for months due to a series of injuries, including issues with his ankle, heel, and knee, delaying his return since India’s 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia.
Reflecting on his struggles, Shami said:
“Those 14 months were very difficult as I had to repeat all the things, and that pinches you. But I got those domestic matches and four international games (against England) to get my confidence back.”
Shami, who was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup with 24 wickets in seven matches, has now surpassed former Indian quick Zaheer Khan as the leading wicket-taker in ICC ODI tournaments, with 60 wickets to Zaheer’s 59.
Handling Social Media Trolls with Grace
Shami’s return to Dubai also brought back memories of the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he faced ugly social media abuse after India’s loss to Pakistan. He was unfairly targeted for his religion, prompting support from Virat Kohli and former cricketers.
When asked about being trolled over his faith, Shami gave a dignified reply:
“Social media these days can lead to unwanted things in your mind. I don’t like to think about such things. People will remind you about poor performances, but as a cricketer, you should focus on the present and plan for the future.”
A Clash Against Pakistan Awaits
With momentum on his side, Shami will now gear up for a high-stakes encounter as India faces arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday. If his recent form is anything to go by, expect another fiery performance from the veteran pacer.
