Zerodha’s Nikhil Kamath backs Essar Group’s clean mobility push with $20 million investment

GreenLine Mobility Solutions, a sustainable transport venture under the Essar Group, has raised $275 million in a major funding round to expand its LNG and electric truck fleet across India. The round includes a notable $20 million investment from Zerodha co-founder and billionaire investor Nikhil Kamath.

This fresh infusion of capital is expected to accelerate GreenLine’s mission to decarbonize long-haul freight with LNG-powered trucks and electrify short-haul logistics routes, addressing one of India’s most pressing environmental challenges: transport emissions.

A Green Bet on the Future of Freight

GreenLine operates a dual fleet—liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks for long-haul routes and electric trucks for shorter city-based deliveries. The company is positioning itself as a key player in India’s green mobility ecosystem by providing end-to-end sustainable logistics solutions to industries with high carbon footprints, such as cement, steel, and FMCG.

In a statement, the company noted that its clean energy logistics model has already resulted in 20–30% lower emissions per trip compared to traditional diesel trucks, offering clients both environmental and economic benefits.

Building India’s First LNG Refueling Highway Network

A critical part of GreenLine’s long-term strategy involves infrastructure development. Its subsidiary, Ultra Gas and Energy, is actively constructing a nationwide LNG refueling network, ensuring reliable energy access for its growing fleet and addressing one of the key bottlenecks in alternative fuel adoption.

According to company officials, the goal is to install over 100 LNG stations by 2027, connecting key freight corridors and industrial zones across the country.

Infrastructure: The Backbone of Green Freight

GreenLine’s growth strategy doesn’t stop at vehicles. Through its subsidiary, Ultra Gas and Energy, the company is building India’s first dedicated LNG refueling network. This includes plans to develop 100+ LNG stations by 2027 along key industrial corridors such as Delhi–Mumbai and Chennai–Bangalore.

This infrastructure is critical not only for GreenLine’s operations but also for catalyzing broader adoption of LNG as a mainstream fuel for freight transport across India.

Investor Confidence Signals Strong Market Potential

The participation of high-profile investors such as Nikhil Kamath highlights growing confidence in the green logistics sector. Kamath, who has increasingly backed climate-tech startups, stated that the investment aligns with his broader goal of promoting clean and scalable solutions in India’s infrastructure landscape.

“Decarbonizing logistics is not just an environmental imperative—it’s a massive business opportunity,” Kamath said in a recent interview.

Why This Matters: India’s Freight Emissions Problem

India’s road freight sector, which transports nearly 60% of the country’s goods, is one of the highest contributors to carbon emissions. According to a report by NITI Aayog and RMI India, freight emissions are expected to grow by nearly 400% by 2050 if clean technologies are not widely adopted.

GreenLine’s model directly supports India’s net-zero ambitions, aligning with government initiatives such as the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme.

Greener Roads Ahead

With robust backing, a clear business model, and a scalable infrastructure plan, GreenLine Mobility Solutions is poised to lead the green freight movement in India. As the country eyes a net-zero future, ventures like GreenLine may prove instrumental in transforming how goods move—cleaner, faster, and more efficiently.
