The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 is coming to its emotional end with the grand celebration of Ganesh Visarjan. Across India, especially in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, lakhs of devotees are preparing to bid farewell to their beloved Ganpati Bappa with joy, songs, and tears in their eyes.

What is Ganesh Visarjan?

Ganesh Visarjan is the ritual of immersing Lord Ganesha’s idol in water, marking the end of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Devotees believe that during the 10-day festival, Lord Ganesha visits their homes and pandals, removes all difficulties, and blesses them with prosperity. On the day of Visarjan, they return Him to Mount Kailash, symbolically through water immersion.

People chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya” (O Lord Ganesha, come again soon next year) while taking the idols in processions to rivers, lakes, ponds, or artificial water tanks.

Date and Timings in 2025

In 2025, Ganesh Visarjan falls on September 9 (Tuesday). Devotees can perform Visarjan on one and a half day, third day, fifth day, seventh day, or tenth day, but the Anant Chaturdashi (10th day) is considered the grand finale.

As per priests and astrologers, immersion during the morning and evening muhurats is considered most auspicious.

How India Celebrates Ganesh Visarjan

  • Maharashtra: Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur witness massive processions. The streets are filled with dhol-tasha beats, dance, and bhajans. Famous idols like Lalbaugcha Raja, Andhericha Raja, and Dagdusheth Ganpati attract lakhs of devotees during visarjan.
  • Telangana and Andhra Pradesh: Hyderabad’s Khairatabad Ganesh, one of the tallest idols in the country, is immersed with great celebration in Hussain Sagar Lake.
  • Karnataka and Goa: Families perform visarjan at home in nearby wells, rivers, or community tanks.
  • Other States: Delhi, Gujarat, and even southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala have begun celebrating Ganeshotsav in recent years with big visarjan rituals.

In recent years, the government has appealed to people to use eco-friendly idols made of clay and natural colors. This helps prevent pollution in rivers and lakes. Many cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad, have also created artificial ponds for visarjan to reduce the environmental impact.

Volunteers and NGOs are working hard to spread awareness about green Ganpati celebrations.

Emotional Farewell

Ganesh Visarjan is not just about ritual; it is about emotion and faith. For 10 days, families treat Ganesha like a guest — offering Him food, prayers, and love. On Visarjan day, people feel both happiness and sadness:

  • Happiness, because they believe Ganesha will return next year with blessings.
  • Sadness, because they have to say goodbye for now.
