USAID Funding Controversy: Modi’s Adviser Slams “Biggest Scam” Claim by DOGE
A recent announcement by the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has ignited a heated debate over US humanitarian funding. DOGE claimed to have revoked significant funds earmarked for global projects, including controversial allocations in South Asia. This includes $21 million intended for “voter turnout in India,” $29 million for “strengthening the political landscape” in Bangladesh, and another $20 million for “fiscal federalism” in Nepal.
The revelation has not only raised eyebrows but has also drawn sharp criticism from Sanjeev Sanyal, a key adviser to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council, lambasted USAID, labeling it the “biggest scam in human history.” He demanded transparency and accountability regarding the alleged funds intended for India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, questioning who in India had actually received the $21 million designated for influencing voter turnout.
The controversy has sparked concerns within India’s ruling BJP about potential foreign interference in the country’s electoral processes. Former Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi, however, dismissed DOGE’s claims as baseless, countering the narrative put forth by the US agency.
USAID, the principal humanitarian arm of the US government, has been a prime target of scrutiny by DOGE, reflecting broader concerns within the Biden administration about fiscal responsibility and the oversight of international aid expenditures.
As the debate unfolds, stakeholders on both sides continue to exchange sharp rebuttals and demands for clarity, underscoring the sensitive nature of international funding in political contexts.
